Sciatica can severely inhibit your quality of life, reducing your mobility and lasting for months or even years. Following are the answers to several questions we frequently receive about sciatica.

.

What is Sciatica?

Your sciatic nerve is the longest in the back and extends into your lower limbs.  As you age, many people experience degeneration of the discs in the spine that can pinch this area. Obesity can also be a factor that leads to wear and tear. Smoking can also contribute to sciatic nerve pain.

What Causes Sciatica?

There is no single cause for this phenomenon, but it can be the result of any number of factors. Sciatica can develop after a person has suffered a spinal injury. It can also happen if a lumbar disc is bulged or herniated. When this happens, pressure is placed on the various nerve roots. It is also possible for poor posture to stress the sciatic nerve over time, or you could be afflicted by a degenerative joint disease.

What are the Symptoms of Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain, often felt as a burning sensation, that radiates out from the sciatic nerve. It can involve discomfort that extends to the extremities, making it difficult to perform everyday tasks. Sufferers may feel tingling or numbness in the legs or buttocks, and it may cause muscle weakness. You may also feel pain when standing, walking, or coughing. It can also reduce the flexibility of the hips.

How Can a Chiropractor Treat Sciatica?

Pain management is an integral part of alleviating sciatica, and this can be performed by relieving the structural misalignments creating tension. You may need adjustments that help discs to return to their proper position to remove the pressure placed by herniated discs.

Strengthening the muscles by recommended exercises discourages sciatica from reappearing in the future, and all can be part of a regime that allays the compressed sciatic nerve without the administration of drugs or pain relievers. Your chiropractor may also use massage to prevent inflammation.
